The floods that have hit mainland Southeast Asia, including northern Thailand, are becoming more serious.
On September 11, Chiang Rai Province was hit by a serious disaster: the Kok River, which flows across the center of Chiang Rai City, overflowed due to the large amount of rain that has been falling since late August in the upstream areas of the Kok River, which flows from Shan State, Myanmar, to Chiang Rai, Thailand, and the effects of the recent Typhoon (Yagi) No. 11. This caused large-scale and widespread flooding. This is an unprecedented disaster in Chiang Rai.
In the Nam Lad area of Rim Kok district, where the Sakura facilities are located, all roads were flooded and a large amount of water flowed into the Sakura Dormitory grounds, flooding the entire first floor of the dormitory to about 80 cm above the floor level.
The Sakura Dormitory grounds began to be gradually flooded from around 3:00 p.m. on September 11, and by evening, muddy water was flowing into the ground floor of all buildings, including Sakura Hall, the office, the Education Center, Sakura Museum, Sunflower Hall in the boys' dormitory, and Sumire Hall in the girls' dormitory. Children below junior high school age evacuated to the second floor and above, and staff and older students worked together to move some of the furniture and equipment on the first floor to the second floor, but the work had to be halted for safety reasons since the lights were out due to a power outage. The floodwaters continued to rise until the next morning, damaging most of the furniture and equipment.
The children spent an anxious night in the midst of the oncoming flooding and power outage, but by the following night on September 12, all Sakura Dormitory students had been safely evacuated.
We plan to begin restoration work on the dormitory facilities. However, many of the facilities located on the ground floor of each Sakura Dormitory facility were severely damaged and will need to be supplemented considerably with appliances, fixtures, and equipment systems in order to lead a normal life.
Therefore, we are seeking emergency relief funds for the restoration of Sakura Dormitory. We are asking for your cooperation.
